Abstract

The progress achieves in the study of geomorphological peculiarities of the territory of the USSR and other countries makes it possible to detail a general notion of geomorphological stage in the development of the Earth (Mesozoi-Cenozoi), which was put forward five years ago. Of the three macrocycles, composing the geomorphologicalstage. the earliest one was characterized by the formation of a basal planation surface of the global peneplain. The macrocycl (2) characterized by the formation of a denudational storey relief (geomorphological levels) was associated witn the most recent tectonic movements. The macrocycle (3) of a terrace geomorphological development was connected with the glaciation and considerable fluctuations of the level of the world ocean in the Quaternary Period.

Abstract

Extensive data obtained in the process off compiling a summary map of planation surfaces and weathering crusts on the territory of the USSR (on the scale 1 :2.500.000) make it possible to draw some general conclusions. Planation surfaces proved to be widespread both in mountain and plain regions of the USSR. They are the following: 1) ancient Mesozoic and Pre-Mesozoic surfaces of a peneplain and pediplain type; 2) geomorphological levels, often polygenetic, of the Cenozoic age. The stages of formation of planation surfaces in Indo-Atlantic and Pacific regions of the USSR were asyncronous. The formation of Pre-Cenozoic planation surfaces was followed by formation of siallitic and ferralitic weathering crusts; the accumulation of thick crusts coincided with the final stages of relief leveling. The analysis of planation surfaces and weathering crusts helps in prospecting for minerals.

Abstract
It has been ascertained that all the middle-oceanic ridges have continuations on continents. This regularity is probably also characteristic of the recently discovered Middle
Arctic ridge — the Gakkel Ridge. The Momo-Zyryan Depression in the North — Hast of
the USSR is probably a continuation of the rilt zone of the Gakkel Ridge.

Geomorphology and economy

Abstract

The study of the dynamics of sea and reservoir shores becomes more and more important due to a rapid economic development of the shores. However, the achievements of science in this field have not so far been properly applied in practice. The article presents results of ignoring recommendations of scientists which resulted in a considerable waste of resources that otherwise could have been avoided. The authors suggest some ways of future research concerning such important practical problems as the dropping of waste water into the sea, an intensive development of the moraine floor, the working out of underwater placers, development of the shores of storage reservoirs of a new type in Siberia, and others.

Abstract

The article deals with the principles of compilation and contents of the legend of a 1:1.000.000 geomorphological map, prepared by the Аll-Union Scientific Research Geological Institute. The author discusses the advantages of a legend compiled according to the principle of mapping restriction surfaces of landforms with characterization of their genesis, morphology, and age. In principle, the suggested legend may be used for the compilation of both review maps and maps of medium and large scales.

Abstract
The new deciphering device «Interpretoscepe» (DDR) is especially efficient for the
purposes of a full-value quantitative and qualitative geomorphological deciphering.
Thanks to the enlargement from 2x to 15x, performed by the instrument, the author detected some traces of an unknown final — stadial moraine of the mountain-valley glaciation and some separate glacial forms (at the enlargement of 5,5x- 6x), which could not be seen under stereoscope (the enlrgement 2x). The device also can measure relative altitudes of the relief with average quadratic errors as follows: on the scale I : 28.000-l,7m;
on the scale I : 17.000—1,0 m; on the scale 1:1.000 —0,6m (with fk=100ram).

Abstract
The article deals with the state of paleogeomorphological investigations in petroleum
geology in the USSR and abroad. An analysis of a number of oil and gas bearing regions
has shown that paleogeomorphological methods may be used for outlining non-structural
oil-gas collectors, conditioned by the forms of paleorelief.
A complex of quantitative methods for analyzing paleorelief is suggested, illustrated
by the reconstruction of the relief of the Pre-Santonian Continental Interval on the Russian
Platform. The authors have reconstructed a regional slope of the territory, compiled
paleohypsometric, paleogeomorphological, and paleomorphostructural maps.
